The Alajuela affiliate was approved by Habitat for Humanity International in early May, and has just begun the process of selecting the first families. It will be working throughout the entire region of Alajuela, and also with the local committee in Atenas. Kimberly Gram, an international volunteer from Texas will be coordinating the affiliate until December. In August, Habitat International will host a Youth Blitz Build in Alajuela where youth from all over the United States, Central America, and Mexico will work together to build two houses.
Alajuela is the largest city and capital of the province with the same name. It is located about 2o minutes west of San José , the capital of Costa Rica. The town is still celebrating the recent championship win of La Liga, Alajuela's Division 1 soccer team. Other important events include Juan Santamaria Day, held April 11th in honor of Costa Rica's National Hero, and the Mango Festival, in July, highlighted by parades, music, food markets, and arts and crafts fairs. In the center of the town the central park and cathedral, topped with a red dome, a national landmark.

High temperatures in Alajuela usually range from 80-85, and lows from 62-64 degrees. From January until March, expect less than half an inch (15 mm) of rain each month. In April, typically 3.5 inches (85 mm) fall. The rainy season begins in May and lasts until December, and brings with it humidity over 80 percent. From May until August, you can expect 10 inches (270 mm) of monthly rain. In September and October, this amount jumps to over 13 inches (350 mm), and in November and December, be prepared for 20 inches (500 mm) of rain each month.
